Bishop Guilfoyle has announced that it is now accepting applications into 6th grade for the 2020-21 academic year. The school is also expanding its admissions criteria for 7th and 8th grades beyond the Pre-AP and Honor Program. BG will now admit junior high students at all levels of study into an expanded Junior High School experience.
“As enrollment for our 7th and 8th grade accelerated programs continued to increase, we were also receiving a growing number of inquiries from junior high families interested in a general curriculum that would allow their students to benefit from the overall BG experience,” said BG President Joe Adams.
“BG has a strong reputation for its innovative and life-changing educational experience that is academically strong, technologically advanced, and based on strong moral foundations. BG’s long heritage as a Catholic school has led to a drive to serve everybody in the community, regardless of background. BG currently serves students of many faiths, and all are fully at home in the school. It is a great environment” he continued.
The supportive atmosphere is what draws many families to BG. Families are welcomed regardless of background or financial circumstances, with need-based scholarships available. BG’s commitment to serve all local families has attracted the support of many local community leaders. “We have truly become a school that serves any family who can benefit from a BG education. We are making the investment to add junior high students to our school family, thanks to support from our friends, alumni, businesses and community partners who recognize the benefit of BG in our community. Some students need a smaller, personal environment to thrive. We all have an interest in students in our area becoming successful adults as they grow into parents, neighbors, friends and community leaders in the future. Our heritage provides a strong foundation on which we have grown and evolved to meet the needs of today’s students.”
BG opened its Pre-AP program for 7th and 8th graders in 2015. The program admitted students through specific testing criteria and was designed to give local families an accelerated private school option closer to home. Pre-AP doubled in size after its first year and tripled the following year as more students applied and completed the testing. BG’s Honors program for 7th and 8th grade was added in 2018-19 to meet demand from students whose test results just missed the cutoff for Pre-AP. While the Pre-AP program will still be available to 7th and 8th graders, students entering grades 6th-8th can now enroll at BG for a general junior high curriculum, although testing will be used for course placement. This is similar to the admissions criteria for BG’s 9-12th grade Senior High which will continue.
“We are excited to open our school to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students next year for our new Junior High program,” said Joan Donnelly, Principal. “Our 7th and 8th grade programs have grown so much; this expansion is a natural next step. We are so pleased to be able to offer this new opportunity to our community and to families in the greater Altoona area.”
There are currently 63 7th and 8th grade students currently enrolled at BG in the Pre-AP and Honors programs. The school is expecting a total of about 80 students across grades 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the 2020-21 school year. Total enrollment at the school is 340 this school year.
